Mannya (translated in English means Pot Holes) is located in the South of Uganda, almost on the Tanzanian border. Dubbed 'mission impossible' by the local diocese an Australian ventured there about ten years ago. He reported back to St Bernard's parish in Geelong, who were looking for a community to sponsor in Africa. Mannya became Fr Peter Foley's personal mission along with the parish of St Bernard's, Geelong.
When they first got involved only a small village was present with a local primary school, ten years on they now have a fully functional medical centre, parish church, secondary school, dormitories and sponsored children. Thanks to the hard work of a small few, particularly St Bernard's Geelong, St Bernard's Essendon and Fr Foley who has been back to Mannya eight times since his first visit.
The Cotton On Foundation joined forces with this amazing group in 2007 and are looking to give them the added financial and resource boost that they require to help empower the local people of Mannya village to live a life full of hope and promise.
The East African Mannya Village is situated a rough four hour drive from the Ugandan capital Kampala, with a population that has been devastated by the AIDS epidemic the community is in desperate need of infrastructure, AIDS awareness, medical assistance and sustainability.
Although the village is over 12,000 kilometres away from our doorstep, the Cotton On Foundation is focused on assisting through constructing new schools, assisting with agriculture and supplying much needed equipment to support sustainable infrastructure.
Ongoing support from the Cotton On Foundation will continue for as long as needed and is essential to the long term survival of the Mannya community. |
